June 26, 2023

The Agriculture and Fisheries Council of the European Union, which met in Brussels last week, was attended by the Cypriot Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Mr Petros Xenophontos.

As the minister stated, one of the issues raised in the council was the Free Trade Agreement between the European Union and Australia regarding various agricultural products. The Swedish presidency informed the participants about the progress of this agreement.

On the part of Cyprus, Mr Xenophontos requested that Cypriot halloumi be included in the list of products that can be exported to Australia duty-free.

He also pointed out that if the list of Geographical Indications gets revised in the future, flagship products of the Member States, which strengthen the agricultural economy of each country, should be added to it.
